The BCYC Cowes Regatta which will take place from Sunday 18th to Saturday 24th July 2010 will be the first UK event to join the Panerai Circuit. In 2009 the circuit included eight of the worlds leading Classic Yacht Regattas, among them the Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta and Régates Royales in Cannes.

2010 will be the sixth edition of the Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge and marks the largest and most renowned classic yacht race in the world. The Circuit takes place from April to September and since its inception in 2005, the circuit has been increasingly successful, demonstrated by the growing list of competitors. Each year the Challenge draws yachting enthusiasts from around the globe and the most highly regarded Classic Yachts sailing today, in 2009 over 350 yachts and 1,500 crews competed overall in the Circuit.

CEO of Officine Panerai, Angelo Bonati said in a statement released today: “We are delighted to align Panerai with the British Classic Yacht Club Cowes Regatta. The reputation, professionalism and camaraderie demonstrated by the BCYC not to mention Cowes Regatta’s position as the key classic yacht event in the UK yachting calendar make them an ideal partner for Panerai.”

British Classic Yacht Club Commodore, David Murrin added: “The British Classic Yacht Club are delighted to become associated with Officine Panerai as principal sponsor of our Cowes Regatta. Panerai are an ideal partner for us because of our shared values. Panerai have shown over a number of years a commitment to supporting premier classic regattas around the world, and we are proud that the British Classic Yacht Club Cowes Regatta is to be numbered among the most prestigious”.

The event will now be known as The British Classic Yacht Club Panerai Cowes Regatta - The BCYC Panerai Cowes Regatta is held in the tidal waters of the Solent, a stretch of sea separating the Isle of Wight from the mainland of England. The highlight of the week’s racing is the Classic Round the Island Race, starting on the Royal Yacht Squadron line before racing the 60 mile course either East or West around the Isle of Wight. The 2010 Round the Island race will be held on Tuesday 20th July.

The BCYC and Officine Panerai envisage that the 2010 event will be the largest Classic Yacht Regatta in the UK since the Americas Cup Jubilee Regatta in 2001, and are predicting that over 65 yachts will compete.

Officine Panerai grows worldwide with five new boutiques

Between November and December 2009 new Officine Panerai boutiques will open in Doha, Beirut, Riyadh, Geneva and Macao

Officine Panerai inaugurates five new boutiques in as many international shopping capitals. Between November and December 2009, in fact, Officine Panerai boutiques will be opened in Doha (Qatar), Beirut (Lebanon), Riyadh (Saudi Arabia), Geneva (Switzerland) and Macao (China). The expansion concerns both recent and fast-growing markets – such as China and the Middle East – and a place of ancient watch-making traditions like Geneva, where the boutique will be inaugurated in the prestigious Rue du Rhône.

The new Officine Panerai boutiques offer customers and collectors the opportunity to immerse themselves fully in the Panerai experience inside exclusive, minimal points of sale where the architecture, furnishings, materials and colours evoke the world of the sea, a world with which the Florentine brand has always enjoyed strong ties. The Panerai watch collections are in fact housed in settings characterised by teak wood and steel, porthole shaped windows and furnishings as sinuous as ocean waves or the hulls of the most elegant yachts.

“For Officine Panerai, opening new mono-brand boutiques– commented Angelo Bonati, CEO of Officine Panerai – not only means growing but also means making the distribution of Panerai watches ever more targeted and exclusive. This is possible through the creation of locations where we can offer a wider selection of products and services, allowing our customers to experience the world of Officine Panerai and its long history, as well as promoting the initiatives through which we want to keep the legend of this historical Italian brand alive”.

Panerai watches are sold worldwide through a select network of authorised dealers and in our boutiques in Florence and Portofino, Madrid, Beverly Hills and New York, Buenos Aires, Dubai, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Beijing and Shanghai.

Stallone Brandishes PVD Panerai Luminor Marina Watch In New Rambo Movie

Through the intensely blood-bathed action fest are numerous shots of watches on the characters' wrists. Sylvester Stallone's John Rambo adorns an interesting Panerai watch. It has been a Hollywood tradition for sometime that popular movie characters have a watch fitting their nature and status. We know of the James Bond Omegas and the Terminator has an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak specially made for Schwarzenegger that is worn proudly. Rambo prefers the popular and stylish vintage looks of Italian Panerai watches.

It is a well known fact that "Sly" Stallone is a big Panerai fan. Rumored to own hundreds of the cult-loved watches, Panerai has even made custom models just for Stallone. One such model has Stallone's autograph engraved on the back and the moniker "SLYTECH" on the face. Watch companies are wonderful in that regard; if you have enough leverage and money, they will make any manner of custom model for you. Actually, Stallone is credited by many as the instigator of Panerai popularity in Hollywood today. You can't buy better publicity if you are a watch maker.

Rambo's Panerai is not just any model, and is likely a custom or very rare piece. The pictures here are as close as I can get to exactly what the Rambo model looks like. Rambo's Panerai is a PVD Luminor Marina Militare. A very spartan look, though richly fitting of the Panerai tradition. PVD watches are black, which is favored among the military for a good reason. Most steel watches are polished or shiny to some degree. To retain stealth, a soldier's watch must not reflect any light while hiding in the brush, or elsewhere. Thus the reason for the black PVD finish is to keep Rambo hidden while he stalks the bad guys. Rambo's watch has a black strap, not brown. Likely a canvas or rubber strap, but possibly leather as well.

Panerai Events:CHAPLIN AND PETER WIN THE PANERAI CLASSIC YACHTS CHALLENGE 2009

On Saturday 26th September 2009 the thirty-first edition of the Régates Royales in Cannes came to a close. This event is the final stage in the Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge 2009, the international regatta circuit for vintage boats (built before 1950) and classic boats (built between 1950 and 1975) sponsored by Officine Panerai. Chaplin and Peter won the Panerai Classic Yacht Challenge 2009 Trophy, respectively in the Classic and Vintage categories, while the overall winners of the Régates Royales, Galvana (Classic yachts) and France (Vintage) received a Panerai watch issued in a one-off, limited edition created in honour of the circuit: the Luminor 1950 Regatta Rattrapante 44 mm, DLC.

Taking part at Cannes this year were sixty-nine yachts split up into seven classes, later joined by sixty-one boats of Dragon class, the 9-metre monotype from 1929 celebrating its 80th anniversary. The enormous numbers of participants gave life to a great party and show for boat-owners, crews and vintage yachts enthusiasts alike.

Here is a brief profile of the Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge 2009 winners: Chaplin is a 16.75-metre wooden Bermudian cutter built in 1974. Based in Naples she is at the disposal of Italian Navy’s Gruppo Vela Altura. The winner of the Vintage category is Peter, a Bermudian of almost 15 metres in length built in 1939, which has recently undergone partial restoration. The victory its category could not have been a better way to celebrate its 70th birthday. In the Dragon class, victory went to Blue Haze.

Also making a comeback at Cannes were the Big Boats, large vessels with a length of between 23 and 36 metres, among which we can name Cambria (1928), the auric ketch Thendara from 1935, Mariella, Moonbeam of Fife, Moonbeam IV and the schooner Sunshine. Also present was the majestic J-Class Shamrock V, a composite-construction boat from 1930 with a wooden hull built on a metal structure. Among the new entries was Mariska, a 15-metre International Tonnage vessel with a length of 23 metres designed and built by the Fife shipyard in 1908 that has only just completed a restoration that took over two and a half years. Mariska belongs to the same class as Tuiga, the auric cutter from 1909 owned by the Yacht Club of Monaco which in Cannes celebrated one hundred years from her launch. In addition, there were eight boats built between 1892 (Marigold, the oldest participating yacht) and 1899.

A more than positive outcome then for the fifth edition of Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge, which saw the overall participation of more than three hundred yachts in the Mediterranean regattas (Antibes, Porto Rotondo and Cannes) and in the ones further overseas (Antigua, Newport and Nantucket). The regatta circuit for the 2010 edition will be defined in the coming months. Also taking part in next year’s edition will be Eilean, the 22-metre ketch built in 1936 by the Fife shipyard and restored by Officine Panerai which, through her, aims to pursue its commitment to the safeguarding and promotion of classic yachting.
